Child theft took place in many countries around the world, but nowhere on such a scale as in Spain: Around 300,000 babies were stolen from their mothers during and even after the Franco dictatorship and sold to childless couples with forged papers. Initially politically motivated, it soon became a lucrative business in which the Catholic Church in particular was involved.
